Forest area annual net change rate in the UNECE region

Description

Changing forest area is a critical measure of how well countries manage and protect forests. The minimum goal is to keep existing forests but, ideally, to establish new ones. Conserving existing forests is essential to store carbon, maintain biodiversity and provide the multiple benefits that newly-planted forest cannot immediately replace.

Definition

Net change is the balance between new areas of forest, planted and naturally regenerated, and the area of forest destroyed by clearance for agriculture, urban expansion or lost to desertification. Forests that are harvested as part of the normal cycle of forest management continue to be classed as forest because this is only a temporary state, and these areas will continue to grow trees in the future.
