Wood removals in the UNECE region

Description

This is how much wood has been taken, not just from forests, but also from other land. It is important as a measure of the extent to which wood will substitute for carbon-intensive materials, like steel and concrete. As a renewable and highly adaptable material, wood has a bright future. Wood removals can be expected to rise with advances in wood technology.

Data Source: ECE TIMBER database, from ECE/FAO/Eurostat/ITTO Joint Forest Sector Questionnaire

Definition

The volume of all parts of trees (alive or dead) taken out of forests, other wooded areas, measured without the bark content. It includes removals of dead or damaged trees.
