Forest ownership in the UNECE region

Description

The percentage of forest that is owned by the State or whose ownership is vested in other public bodies. In some countries, almost all forest is in public ownership for historical reasons. In others, the balance between private and public ownership varies markedly.

Definition

Publicly-owned forests include forest owned by the state at all governance levels, units of the public administration, or institutions or corporations owned by the public administration. Forest owned by individuals, families, private communities, private co-operatives, corporations and business entities, and other private institutions are classified as privately-owned. Other ownership includes forest area not covered by public or private ownership or where ownership is unknown.
