Forest management certification in the UNECE region

Description

Forest areas that satisfy the criteria to be classed as certified, under one or more of several independently-verified certification schemes. The management of these forests must meet exacting social welfare, employment and environmental standards before they can be classed as 'certified'.

Definition

Certification is a voluntary process. Independent bodies assess management against standards that must be met before being classed as 'certified', allowing products to carry the relevant logo. The logo assures customers the wood has come from sustainably-managed forests.Reported values include areas certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), adjusted to remove double certification.
