General note on the UNECE MDG Database:

The database aims to show the official national estimates of MDG-indicators used for monitoring progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. Data is shown alongside official international estimates of MDG-indicators (as published on the official United Nations site for the MDG Indicators: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/mdg). Besides the international MDG-indicators, other indicators and disaggregates that are relevant for the UNECE-region are included.

Population below $1 (PPP) per day (%)

Definition: This indicator is defined as the percentage of the population living in households below the international poverty line where the average daily consumption (or income) per person is less than $1.25 a day measured at 2005 international prices adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP).

Income poorest quintile to the income of the richest quintile

Definition: The ratio of the income of the poorest quintile to the income of the richest quintile is the share of a country’s national income that accrues to the poorest quintile (fifth) of the population to the share of a country's national income that accrues to the richest quintile (fifth).

Poverty gap ratio at $1 a day (PPP) (%)

Definition: The poverty gap is the mean shortfall of the total population from the international poverty line of $1.25 (counting the non-poor as having zero shortfall), expressed as a percentage of the poverty line.

Poverty gap ratio at national poverty line (%)

Definition: The poverty gap is the mean shortfall of the total population from the national poverty line (counting the non-poor as having zero shortfall), expressed as a percentage of the poverty line.

Poorest quintile‘s share in national income or consumption (%)

Definition: The share of a country’s national consumption or income that accrues to the poorest quintile (fifth) of the population.

Gini coefficient

Definition: The Gini coefficient measures the extent to which the distribution of income among households within a country deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. A Gini coefficient of 0 represents perfect equality, while a coefficient of 1 implies perfect inequality. The coefficient is calculated from the Lorenz curve, in which cumulative family income is plotted against the number of families arranged
