General note on the UNECE MDG Database:

The database aims to show the official national estimates of MDG-indicators used for monitoring progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. Data is shown alongside official international estimates of MDG-indicators (as published on the official United Nations site for the MDG Indicators: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/mdg). Net enrolment ratio in primary education, both sexes

Definition: The net enrolment ratio (NER) in primary education is the number of children of official primary school age who are enrolled in primary education expressed as a percentage of the total population of children of official primary school age.

Net enrolment ratio in secondary education, both sexes

Definition: The net enrolment ratio in secondary education is the number of children of official secondary school age who are enrolled in secondary education (ISCED97 level 2 and 3) expressed as a percentage of the total population of children of official secondary school age. This indicator is not monitored in The official United Nations site for the MDG Indicators.

Net enrolment ratio in tertiary education, both sexes

Definition: The net enrolment ratio in secondary education is the number of children of official secondary school age who are enrolled in tertiary education expressed as a percentage of the total population of children of official secondary school age. This indicator is not monitored in The official United Nations site for the MDG Indicators.

Net enrolment in pre-school education

Definition: The net enrolment ratio (NER) in pre-school education is the number of children of pre-primary school age who are enrolled in pre-primary or primary education expressed as a percentage of the total population of children below the of official primary school age.

Pupils starting grade 1 who reach last grade of primary, total (%)

Definition: This indicator measures the percentage of a cohort of pupils enrolled in grade 1 of the primary level of education in a given school year who are expected to reach the last grade of primary school, regardless of repetition.

Primary completion rate, both sexes

Definition: Primary Completion measured by the Gross Intake Ratio to Last Grade of primary education is the total number of new entrants in the last grade of primary education (according to the International Standard Classification of Education or ISCED97), regardless of age, expressed as percentage of the total population of the theoretical entrance age to the last grade of primary.

Literacy rates of 15-24 years old, both sexes (%)

Definition: Literacy rate of 15–24 year-olds, or the youth literacy rate, is the percentage of the population aged 15–24 years who can both read and write with understanding a short simple statement on everyday life.

Women to men parity index, as ratio of literacy rates, 15-24 years old

Definition: The ratio of literate women to men aged 15–24 years (Literacy Gender Parity Index) is the ratio of the female literacy rate to the male literacy rate for the age group 15–24.
