General note on the UNECE MDG Database:

The database aims to show the official national estimates of MDG-indicators used for monitoring progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. Data is shown alongside official international estimates of MDG-indicators (as published on the official United Nations site for the MDG Indicators: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/mdg). Besides the international MDG-indicators, other indicators and disaggregates that are relevant for the UNECE-region are included.

At present, the tables include data from the latest official MDG-report of each country. Currently, data from official dedicated MDG-websites and previous official national MDG-reports are being added. Additionally, more detailed metadata is being added to the footnotes. Additional indicators might be added if they are used generally across the region.

Definition of the indicators: Explanations on the indicators are listed below. Deviations from the standard definitions provided here are specified in the country-specific footnotes.

Proportion of land area covered by forest (%)

Definition: The indicator is defined as the proportion of forest area to total land area and expressed as a percentage.

Energy use (kg oil equivalent) per $1,000 GDP (Constant 2005 PPP $)

Definition: Energy use per GDP (Constant 2005 PPP $) is the kilogram of oil equivalent of energy use per gross domestic product converted to 2005 constant international dollars using purchasing power parity rates. Energy use refers to use of primary energy before transformation to other end-use fuels, which is equal to indigenous production plus imports and stock changes, minus exports and fuels supplied to ships and aircraft engaged in international transport.

Consumption of all Ozone-Depleting Substances in ODP metric tons

Definition: This indicator is the sum of the consumption of the ozone-depleting potential (ODP)- weighted metric tons of all ozone-depleting substances (ODS) controlled under the Montreal Protocol.

Consumption of ozone-depleting CFCs in ODP metric tons

Definition: Consumption of ozone-depleting CFCs in ODP metric tons.

Proportion of total water resources used (%)

Definition: The proportion of total renewable water resources used is the total volume of groundwater and surface water withdrawn from their sources for human use (in the agricultural, domestic/municipal and industrial sectors), expressed as a percentage of the total actual renewable water resources.

Population using solid fuels (%)

Definition: The percentage of population using solid fuels is the percentage of the population that relies on solid fuels as the primary source of domestic energy for cooking and heating. Solid fuels include biomass fuels, such as wood, charcoal, crops or other agricultural waste, dung, shrubs and straw, and coal.
