Armenia has been implementing various programs to advance energy efficiency. While technical improvements are important, incorporating community perspectives is critical to ensure long-term sustainability. Civil society organizations play a key role in promoting awareness, training and adopting energy-efficient solutions, contributing to SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals).
Identifying active community NGOs working on energy efficiency proved challenging.
Information dissemination and awareness-raising were necessary to engage local residents.
Remote communities like Kapan and surrounding areas had limited access to trained specialists and information.
Civil society engagement: Sustainable Development NGO, founded in 2011, organized seminars and training sessions in rural areas on climate change, economic and environmental benefits of energy-efficient technologies, targeting students, educators and entrepreneurs.
Technical awareness and visits: in 2015, the NGO conducted a four-day study tour with fifteen professors, engineers and NGO representatives to examine energy-efficient buildings and renewable energy technologies across Armenia.
Local capacity development: in 2014, the NGO established an energy efficiency and renewable energy laboratory at the Kapan branch of the National Polytechnic University of Armenia, equipped with resources, equipment and specialized literature.
Market support: local stores adapted to the growing demand, providing energy-efficient building materials, consultations and guidance for retrofitting houses and apartments.
Practical solutions adopted: residents implemented measures such as replacing windows and light bulbs, insulating walls, improving basements, selecting efficient heating boilers and installing solar panels.
Residential buildings retrofitted for energy efficiency show improved comfort, thermal conditions and utility cost reductions
Communities experienced more active social life and economic benefits.
Local specialists are trained to continue energy efficiency work, ensuring long-term results.
Knowledge and practices from temporary international projects remain within the community.
Students, educators and entrepreneurs are key agents of change in their communities.
Residents across settlements increasingly integrate energy-efficient solutions in home renovations.
Businesses, including mining enterprises, have potential for significant energy savings when consulted and engaged
Projects focusing on energy efficiency in Syunik have revitalized communities, delivered economic and environmental benefits and strengthened local capacity. Continued engagement, awareness-raising and emphasis on energy efficiency are essential to maintain and expand these positive changes.
